How to plan an EV road trip in India
A practical checklist for driving an electric car across India's intercity highways in 2026. The good news: the charging network is good enough that most drives are doable. The catch: only if you plan them like an EV, not like a petrol trip with extra steps.
1. Start from usable range, not brochure range
The ARAI range on the sticker assumes a test cycle. On an Indian expressway at 90–110 km/h, in real weather, with AC on and a full car, you will get roughly 70–80% of the sticker number. Plan against usable range, not brochure range.
If your car says 450 km ARAI, plan against 315–360 km. That is not a defect. It is physics.
2. Pick your stops before you pick your car
The main planning decision is not "where do I want to stop for lunch" — it is "where can I safely charge for 30–45 minutes on this specific route." Everything else fits around that.
Rules of thumb:
- Aim for a stop every 150–200 km on a highway drive. This leaves enough remaining charge that a single failure still gets you to the next working charger.
- Prefer a stop that is on the highway, not 5 km off it. Detours compound.
- Verify the stop can take your connector type — CCS2 is now standard for most 4-wheelers but do not assume.
3. Always have a backup on the same road
The single most useful planning habit: for every stop you plan, know the next working alternative on the same road. Not on a parallel highway. Not a 40 km detour. Same road, further on, ideally within 30 km.
If your primary is occupied, down, or slower than expected, the backup is what turns a two-hour rescue into a fifteen-minute reroute.
4. Charge to 80%, not 100%
Fast chargers slow down sharply above 80% state of charge. The last 20% can take as long as the first 60. On a highway trip, three shorter stops at 80% beat two long stops at 100%.
Exception: the final leg before your overnight stop. Then top up as much as you comfortably want.
5. Weather changes the math
- Heat: AC load can cost you 10–15% of range on a 40°C afternoon. Charge sessions are also slower because the battery-management system throttles to protect the pack.
- Rain: Speeds drop, range improves slightly (less AC), but visibility and pooled water can force detours to non-highway roads with fewer chargers.
- Cold hills: Above 1,500 m in winter, expect a 15–20% range hit.
6. Have one payment fallback
India's charging landscape spans multiple networks. If you plan for a single payment method, you will find yourself at a charger it does not support. Either sign up for the two or three networks on your route in advance, or use an app that abstracts payment across networks so you never have to think about it.
7. When a charger fails, do this
- Check state of charge and range to your backup. If you can make it comfortably, go.
- If not, and you have one support number for the network, call it before troubleshooting. They can often reset the charger remotely.
- If neither works, drop to 60 km/h. That single change extends your range 15–20%. It buys most people the difference to a working charger.
What actually saves the trip: the plan, not the pin count
A well-planned EV trip on a good route with three verified stops is more reliable than a badly-planned trip with fifteen listed pins to choose from.
The point of planning is not to prove you can do it. It is to remove the decisions from the middle of the drive.
