What it costs to drive an EV across India
Home charging is cheap. Highway fast charging is not — but it is still meaningfully cheaper than petrol. Here is the arithmetic, and the honest trade-offs, for driving an EV across India in 2026.
The one number you need: kWh per 100 km
A modern electric car in Indian conditions uses roughly 15–20 kWh per 100 km at highway speeds. Smaller cars (e-hatchbacks) are closer to 12–14. Full-size SUVs are closer to 22–25. Everything below hangs off this number.
Home charging cost
Most Indian residential electricity is billed between ₹6 and ₹10 per kWh, depending on state and slab.
- 17 kWh/100 km × ₹8/kWh = ₹1.36 per km
- Full charge of a 60 kWh battery = ₹480 for roughly 350 km of real highway range.
Home charging is cheap enough that many EV owners never think about it. This is the case that gets quoted in ads.
Highway fast charging cost
Public DC fast chargers in India price by kWh, typically ₹18 to ₹25 per kWh. The upper end is more common on premium networks and highway locations.
- 17 kWh/100 km × ₹22/kWh = ₹3.74 per km
- Adding 40 kWh at a highway stop = ₹880 for roughly 230 km of additional range.
Yes, that is nearly 3× home charging. It is also still cheaper than the alternative.
Compared to petrol
Assume a mid-size petrol car at 14 km/l and petrol at ₹105/litre:
- Petrol: 105 ÷ 14 = ₹7.50 per km
- Diesel (16 km/l at ₹95/litre): ₹5.94 per km
The honest comparison for a real highway trip
A 1,200 km round trip that requires four highway fast-charge sessions plus home top-ups on either end:
- Home charge kWh: ~40 · at ₹8/kWh = ₹320
- Highway charge kWh: ~160 · at ₹22/kWh = ₹3,520
- Total EV: ₹3,840 — about ₹3.20/km blended
- Same trip on petrol at ₹7.50/km: ₹9,000
Even leaning almost entirely on highway fast charging, a long EV trip in India runs about 55–60% cheaper than the petrol equivalent. Add home charging at either end and it drops further.
What is not in these numbers
Fuel is only part of running-cost. EVs win on service intervals (no engine oil, no timing belt, regenerative braking) and lose on tyres (heavier cars) and battery-warranty replacement risk after warranty expires. On a five-year horizon, the running-cost gap widens further in the EV's favour.
What EVs do not do is buy back your time. A 30-minute fast-charge session is still 30 minutes. That trade is either fine (if you would have stopped anyway) or friction (if you would not have).
What to do with these numbers
- If your driving is 80% urban and short, home charge is doing almost all the work — you are effectively paying ₹1.36/km.
- If you take highway trips often, plan them like you would plan diesel refuels: enough stops that you are never desperate, and enough backups that a failure is annoying, not disastrous.
- The gap between ₹1.36 (home) and ₹3.74 (highway) is real, but the gap between either of those and ₹7.50 (petrol) is much larger. That is the number that matters.
