How to pick an EV for road trips in India
The most-quoted number in every EV brochure — ARAI range — is the one that matters least on a highway. If you plan to drive intercity, four other numbers matter more. Here is the buyer's framework, and how to read a spec sheet as an EV road-tripper would.
The four numbers that actually matter
- Real highway range at 100 km/h. Usually 70–80% of the ARAI number.
- DC fast-charge peak power, sustained across the 20–80% state-of-charge window (not just the marketing peak).
- Connector compatibility. In India today, that means CCS2 for DC, Type 2 for AC. Anything else is a compromise (see our connector types explainer).
- Efficiency in kWh per 100 km. A more efficient car with a smaller battery can outrun a heavier car with a bigger battery.
What "real highway range" looks like by segment
Rough categories, at Indian expressway speeds (90–110 km/h), full car, AC on, 40°C ambient:
- Compact e-hatch (30–40 kWh battery): real highway range 180–240 km. Fine for short intercity hops. Marginal for a Delhi–Jaipur run in one hit.
- Compact e-SUV (40–55 kWh): 240–320 km. Comfortable for one-charge intercity trips up to 300 km.
- Mid-size e-SUV (55–75 kWh): 320–420 km. This is the sweet spot for long road trips: one charge covers a normal morning drive, one fast-charge stop covers most of the afternoon.
- Large e-SUV / e-sedan (75–100+ kWh): 420–550+ km. Longer non-stop range, but the battery weight costs you efficiency and the fast-charge session is longer (bigger battery to fill).
The under-appreciated variable: charging curve, not peak
Brochures shout the peak kW. That number describes maybe five minutes of the charging session. What matters for total trip time is the sustained speed across the 20–80% window — the useful range you actually want to add.
A rough rule of thumb: a car that adds 200 km of real range in 30 minutes on a matched highway charger is a fast one. A car that needs 50 minutes for the same gain is slow. Ask for the 20–80% charge time in minutes on a specific charger power (say 150 kW DC), not the peak.
What to test-drive for, if you can
- Drive a stretch at 100 km/h and check the trip computer's kWh/100 km reading. Compare to the brochure.
- If possible, plug into a real DC fast charger and watch the power stay flat for 10 minutes. If it drops fast, the sustained speed is lower than advertised.
- Try the AC on full blast on a hot day and drive at highway speed for 20 minutes. Note the range hit.
What to ignore
- ARAI range as a headline number. Multiply by 0.75 and use that.
- 0–100 acceleration. Impressive at 4 seconds, mostly irrelevant on a highway trip.
- V2L / V2H features. Nice-to-have. Not why you buy the car.
Segment-by-segment quick guidance
Rather than name specific models (they change every year), here is the pattern:
- Budget under ₹15L: compact e-hatch or entry e-SUV. Best for city daily + occasional 200–300 km intercity. Plan more charging stops.
- ₹15–30L: mid-size e-SUV with 50–60 kWh. This is where you start getting real one-charge intercity range.
- ₹30–60L: mid-to-large e-SUV or e-sedan with 70+ kWh and 150+ kW fast charging. Comfortable one-stop 800 km days.
- Above ₹60L: premium long-range EVs. Diminishing returns on trip time beyond this — the network becomes the bottleneck, not the car.
The best EV for a road trip in India is not the one with the biggest battery. It is the one whose real highway range, sustained charging speed, and connector fit the roads you actually drive.
